Day 12
Today was all about the river and its surroundings. After yesterday's 'Sunday Crowd' it was much quieter and peaceful today.
Morning in Henley was misty but not too cold. Before we left, we had a look around the town, despite the light not being exactly brilliant for photography. The town is full of old houses still in use - the Catherine Wheel hotel we stayed in is said to date back to 1499.
Leaving town to resume the downstream walk, one sees the 'new' Henley - a river full of boats with new or redone houses as the backdrop.
Our first break was in Aston where the angler's pub, the 'Flower Pot'was open. The bar with mounted fish (and wild boar, for some reason) all over the walls indicated the clientele (actual and preferred, probably).
Lunch in Hurley was at a pub that claims to be the oldest in England [Ye Olde Bell], dating back to 1132.
Despite the two interesting pubs, what made the walk today was the Thames itself - river and its surroundings. Vegetation - especially with the sun in the right place, looked quite spectacular.
Did 18 km today - tomorrow will be a bit longer. In a couple of days we would have a two-day break in Windsor. Should be good!
Cheers.
